James Suckling
This elegant sparkling has aromas of raw walnuts and hazelnuts, white grapefruit, bread dough, white sesame and seaweed. It’s electric and vibrant on the palate with so much fresh and salty minerality. Sleek and focused, with tight and fine bubbles. Bone-dry. 100% chardonnay from vines planted in 1962 in a 1.3 ha plot in Avize. No dosage added. Drink or hold.

Wine Advocate
The 2013 Extra-Brut Grand Cru Avize – Champ Caïn derives from a parcel planted on a south-facing slope whose grapes were picked on October 10, 2023. It reveals a dense, complex bouquet with aromas of peach, pear, spring flowers, almonds, pastry and citron oil combined with a fresh, minty character. Medium to full-bodied and perfectly balanced, this 2013 has a tauter and more fine-boned texture than usual, which is enhanced by bubbles of striking finesse and delicacy. It requires patience (three to five years) to realize all its potential. Only 11,220 bottles and 398 magnums were produced.

Vinous
The 2013 Extra-Brut Avize Champ Caïn Grand Cru is a fabulous example of the year as seen from these old-vine blocks planted in 1962. Rich and luxurious, the 2013 possesses notable vertical intensity to play o its considerable depth. Lemon confit, white flowers, graphite, sage and menthol infuse the palate with tons of textural resonance. The 2013 is approachable now, but it remains a
young, dense Champagne. There’s just another register of intensity vis-a-vis the other wines in this tasting. Bottled with no dosage.

Vinous
The 2014 Extra-Brut Avize Champ Caïn Grand Cru is a Champagne of extreme precision. Long aging on the lees built gorgeous texture and complexity throughout. Dried pear, chamomile, dried flowers and light hazelnut overtones all grace the 2014. The more mineral-driven, stricter side of Avize begins to emerge with a bit of time in the glass. The no-dosage style works quite well in this airy, focused Champagne. Disgorged: January 2024.
