About Churchill’s

Founded in 1981 by John Graham, Churchill’s became the first new Port Wine Company in 50 years. Named after his wife, Caroline Churchill, the company was born from John’s desire to carry on his family’s long tradition of port-making while crafting a unique, fresh, and dry style that reflects his personal touch. Over the decades, Churchill’s expanded to include a full range of ruby and tawny ports, but its commitment to vintage quality remains unchanged.

In 1999, Churchill’s acquired Quinta da Gricha, a 50-hectare grade-A vineyard that Johnny had coveted since his early days with Cockburn-Smithes. This acquisition marked a turning point, giving Churchill’s control over its grape supply and opening the door to producing Douro still wines.

In 2002, Johnny partnered with innovative Portuguese winemaker Ricardo Pinto Nunes to create Churchill’s Estates and Quinta da Gricha Douro wines. Together, they blend the discipline of vintage port-making with a spirit of experimentation, contributing to the vibrant new Douro wine movement.
