A wildly perfumed bouquet of earthy rose, white pepper, and dried strawberries makes the 2021 Patelin de Tablas a total pleasure on the nose. Silky-smooth yet full of energy, this engulfs the palate in a pure blend of red fruits and spices, as sour citrus hints add contrast. It finishes pleasantly chewy, long, and full of zesty tension. Residual acids keep the mouth watering for more. In 2021, the Patelin de Tablas had an elevated amount of Mourvèdre, at 33%, and a bit less Grenache, giving this a wonderfully spicy character.

Slang in French for ‘neighbourhood’, the Patelin wines are and value-driven. This SGM-based blend has a dash of Counoise ‘for complexity’. Charming red fruit nose of cherries and plums, black pepper, and a hint of spice, then a cleansing and refreshing palate that’s acid-driven, with blue fruit notes and delicate spice. What a light-handed Paso red can do.

Decanter
The Patelin de Tablas serves as a portrait of the greater Paso Robles AVA year after year. It shows the region’s ability, even if other producers may not follow suit, to produce a ripe, redolent wine at under 14% abv—aromatics of smoky rose petals, spicy chicory root and a blend of peppercorns. The palate is densely fruited while remaining light on its feet. Dark blackberries, fig and plum fruits are lifted by savoury dry herbs, crushed stone minerality and a lift of five spices.
