Miguel Torres Escaleras de Empedrado Pinot Noir
Delicate cherry red color, with little layer, as this variety of grape should be. Intense, elegant aroma. It shows notes of sour cherry, rosehip, undergrowth, mushrooms and moss, which take us to the forests of the Chilean coast, the dawn and the faint, distant sea breeze. The mouth is balanced, fresh, mineral. It surprises with salty, flagstone and graphite notes, ending with a final, long, elegant, refreshing and distinct. Wine with personality that invites you to discover the secrets of pairing. Paired with wild mushrooms, stewed rabbit and hare, confit goose.

Miguel Torres Escaleras de Empedrado Pinot Noir 2014

Part of the vertical tasting of all the vintages of the top Pinot Noir from Empedrado in Maule, the 2014 Escaleras de Empedrado was the one that felt different from the rest, more evolved. They used a higher percentage of new oak, which is more oxidative, and the wine seems to be evolving at a faster pace then the others. The 2014 vintage had concentration and was dry, with a polar frost that affected most valleys and low yields after a warm summer and an earlier ripeness of the grapes. The tannins also feel drier and not as elegant and as sophisticated as the other vintages. They tell me the wine is like that, with the slight bottle variation after six or more years in bottle. Curiously enough, this is the year with the lowest pH, which maybe contributes to the more austere mouthfeel. Some 4,000 bottles were filled in October 2017.

Shows delicious ripe fruit, such as blackberry compote, raspberry fool and boysenberries. Warm and juicy in the mouth with succulent tannins and a medium-long finish. Drink in 2021.

The 2014 Pinot Noir Escaleras de Empedrado hails from a mountain vineyard planted in Empedrado, Maule. Ruby-red in hue. The oaky nose offers hints of caramel and candied sour cherry. Lean and refreshing in the mouth, the flavors are ripe for the grape, and rounded o by the oak. This vintage was stricken by a severe frost event in spring.

Miguel Torres Escaleras de Empedrado Pinot Noir 2015

2015 was a very warm and but not so dry year, and the grapes for the 2015 Escaleras de Empedrado were picked one week earlier than in previous years. I retasted this wine in the context of a vertical of all the vintages produced of this wine between 2012 and 2019. It has some effect from the warm year, but it’s quite subtle. It shows moderate evolution; it’s still juicy and fills your mouth and comes through as balanced and clean, and it has fine tannins. It is healthy, and the marked difference of temperatures between day and night brought freshness. The change from 2014 to 2015 was that here all the barrels were used, nothing new. They produced 4,400 bottles. It was bottled in July 2018.

The whole-bunch character really pops out here with red apples and dried blackberries with tangerine undertones. Full-bodied with lots of muscular tannins and a chewy finish. A bold but impressive style. Drink in 2023.

Interesting, engaging and wild aromas of dark fruits, roasted herbs and leather. Characterful on the palate with an attractive structure and lot of energy. Drink 2021-2022.”
