With fruit from the mighty village of Serralunga d’Alba, the Massolino 2020 Barolo Margheria (with 7,400 bottles made) is a classic expression. You get all those pretty Serralunga d’Alba elements with dark fruit, ferrous earth, orange peel and blue flower. I find this warm vintage to be especially fine-textured and elegant. There is a note of sweet cherry on the close. This bottle needs to flesh out with more cellar time.

A ripe style, this red features cherry, raspberry, plum and eucalyptus flavors, with hints of licorice and iron. Firms up midpalate, leaving a compact yet complex finish that echoes the fruity and savory notes. Best from 2027 through 2045. 610 cases made, 185 cases imported.

Vinous
The 2020 Barolo Margheria is a very pretty wine that shows the gentler side of the year. Dried herbs, menthol, incense, new leather and licorice all take shape in the glass. The 2020 is a soft, uncharacteristically open-knit Margheria that will drink well with only minimal cellaring.

I like the freshness and vivid red-fruited character. Medium-bodied with firm, slightly chewy tannins. It’s compact and structured with a tense and lively aftertaste. Vivid and bright with hibiscus undertones to the orange and berry character. Try from 2027, but already very pretty.

This Margheria Barolo is a stunning expression of elegance, with captivating high-toned fruit and delicate hints of strawberry tops. The palate is refined and graceful, with fine-grained tannins and mouthwatering acidity that enhance the pure, precise flavors. A true embodiment of finesse, this wine is a standout example of the cru’s potential. Drink 2026-2045.

Wine Advocate
The Massolino 2021 Barolo Margheria draws its fruit from Serralunga d’Alba. It reveals aromas of forest berry and wild cherry with candied orange, flint and crushed granite. I also find toasted aniseed at the back. The team at Massolino has done great work managing the tannins that feel quite silky and long, rendering a glossy sheen to the finish.

This has lovely aromas of blueberries, pine resin, orange rind and a touch of lavender. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with supple tannins in the context of the vintage. It has a seductive, tender, well-integrated fruit profile that makes it very attractive. Drink or hold.

Vinous
The 2021 Barolo Margheria is a brisk, vibrant young Barolo. Crushed rocks, slate, white pepper, orange peel and red-toned fruit are all nicely delineated. This is an especially lively wine for Margheria. While I appreciate its energy, the 2021 is very much on the lighter side and also a pretty big stylistic departure from the past. Expression of place is in a precarious spot.
