Massolino, Barbaresco 2020

The 2020 Barbaresco is a terrific follow up to the 2019. A wine of nerve and grace, the 2020 sizzles with energy. Finely sculpted red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, crushed rocks and orange zest all grace this super-expressive, mid-weight Barbaresco. An explosion of sweet floral and spice notes lifts the gorgeous, beautifully perfumed, vibrant finish. I love the classicism here.

The Massolino 2020 Barbaresco is slightly closed at this young stage and needs a little more time in bottle. You do get soft cherry and wild cassis with crushed stone and blue flower. It just needs more time to come together. Production is an ample 20,000 bottles.

Wine Advocate
The Massolino 2021 Barbaresco (in the bottle with the white label for the non-cru selections) has a lovely bouquet that admittedly leans toward the riper side of the Nebbiolo spectrum with mineral notes, redcurrant and dried flower. The wine feels fresh and tart on the palate, and you do get extra textural heft and fiber in this vintage. This is a blend of fruit from Serraboella, Albesani and Starderi (with 24,000 bottles created).

The 2021 Barbaresco is a blend from parcels in Albesani, Serraboella and tarderi. Gracious and nuanced, the 2021 offers up hints of crushed flowers, orange peel, mint, sweet red berry fruit and spice. Readers will find a superclassic Barbaresco. Lifted aromatics, mid-weight structure and persistent yet fine tannins give the wine its shape. This is beautifully done.

Bright cinnamon and earthy strawberry aromas with violets and dried cherries. Firm, with lifted acidity, dusty yet ripe tannins, a chewy mid-palate and ripe fruit on the finish. Approachable Barbaresco but will age nicely, too. Drink or hold.

Wine Spectator
Aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry, rose, wet hay and white pepper combine with a firm structure and vibrant acidity in this expressive, complex red, which is harmonious and long on the fruit- and savory-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2043. 2,100 cases made, 600 cases imported.

Bright ruby color, the 2022 Barbaresco is a floral and fruity wine with a more immediate appeal in its notes of candied berries, fresh perfume, herbes de Provence, and strawberries. Elegant and mid-weight, it has a weightless feel, with fine tannins and a gently tapered, more modest finish. It’s an understated style to enjoy over the next 6-7 years. bright ruby color, the 2022 Barbaresco is a floral and fruity wine with a more immediate appeal in its notes of candied berries, fresh perfume, herbes de Provence, and strawberries. Made in a slightly reductive style, this is smoky and floral with a strong rose aroma, peach tea and sweet spices. Medium-bodied, it has firm yet light-framed tannins and crisp acidity. Chewy finish. Drinkable now but best from 2026.

“Perfumed floral nose of red fruit; peppery spice, tight tannins and a crisp acidity on the palate.”
