Legado del Moncayo, Garnacha, Campo de Borja, Vendimia Seleccionada "Montana"

This wine is made from vines averaging 40 years old. The old bush vines are gown at high elevation, 700-750 meters above sea level on a rugged, windy, exposed hillside that forces the vines to struggle to grow. The poor, stony, iron-rich red clay soils provide great structure in the finished wine. All of the grapes were hand harvested prior to fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Following fermentation, the wine was aged for 7 months in used French oak barrels for additional complexity and richness. Silver Medal 3rd Asia Wine Trophy, Daejeon Korea

The wine is deeper on the nose from the older vines, offering up scents of dark berries, spit-roasted venison, dark soil tones, coffee bean, a hint of the autumnal shadings to come with bottle age, woodsmoke and garrigue. On the palate the wine is deep, ripe, full-bodied and chewy, with an excellent core of fruit, fine soil inflection, firm tannins and a long, complex and promising finish. There is just a whisper of backend heat here, but overall the wine is nicely balanced and will be a fine drink once it softens up a bit.
