The composition of this blended Morey premier cru changes with the 2022 vintage: there is no more young vine fruit from the Clos des Lambrays (since they are no longer young). The blend now comprises Clos Sorbè, Les Blanchards, and small amounts of La Riotte and Le Village to make up 0.8 hectares. The blend delivers a superb, elegant wine with a luminous blackberry fruit with hints of violets and spice. The texture has more density, tannin, and less lively freshness than the Clos Baulet. The grapes are partially destemmed and gently fermented before ageing in cask (40% new).

Vinous
The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Loups 1er Cru is the first vintage not to include fruit from the Grand Cru, as the vines have reached 22 years, so that is not blended into the Clos des Lambrays. It now includes fruit from Les Blanchard, La Riotte and Le Village (yes, the latter is a Premier Cru). This has a very perfumed, oral bouquet with crushed strawberry and wild cherry scents, potpourri and a hint of lavender – quite Vosne-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with ne-grain tannins. There is good depth here and fine complexity and salinity on the finish; this reconfigured Les Loups is worth seeking out.

Packed with black currant, blackberry, black pepper, mineral and spice flavors, this red is lively and graceful. Gathers weight on the finish, where a dense swath of tannins flexes its muscles. Shows terrific balance and a lengthy aftertaste. Best from 2029 through 2045.

Vinous
The 2023 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Loups 1er Cru contains around 40% whole bunch this year, coming from deeper soils that are more clayey than those for the Village Cru. This is very well defined on the nose, with brambly red fruit and briar unfolding with each swirl yet remaining very controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Quite sweet on the mid-palate with just a hint of dark chocolate, this is actually quite understated on the finish. Give it a couple of years once bottled.

This comes from the bottom of the slope with more clay soil, giving the wine more flesh and ripeness. It’s heady with succulent blackberries and earthy spices. The long, sleek tannins wrap around the palate while the gentle arch of acidity delivers a solid finish.

Decanter
There is an edge of chocolate to the ripe black plum aromas of this powerful wine. The texture is rich and dense; in 2023 the alcohol is generous at 14% (the maximum for the domaine). The vines are scattered throughout the appellation down-slope from the village (in Clos Sorbè, Blanchards, La Riotte and Le Village); half the grapes are fermented as whole clusters, and the wine is ageing in cask (40% new).
