Chateau Beychevelle

View Winery Website

Château Beychevelle, the first major estate visible off the D2 Médoc Route de Châteaux near Saint Julien, is often called “The Versailles of Bordeaux” for its stunning gardens, ancient conifers, and Baroque architecture. But this Fourth Growth estate is more than just a pretty face. Recent vintages have shifted from a traditionally supple style to a more concentrated approach, earning high praise from critics like Robert Parker Jr. and Decanter’s Jane Anson.

Founded by the Foix-Candale family and later owned by the Duke of Épernon, the estate’s name, Beychevelle, originates from “baisser le voile” or “lower the sails,” a nod to the Duke’s naval influence. Now under the ownership of Suntory and Pierre Castel, Château Beychevelle is pushing toward organic farming, with a focus on purity, elegance, and sustainability in its winemaking. With reduced yields and precise vinification, its wines showcase the estate’s commitment to quality.
