Bright ruby. Zesty red and dark berry aromas are complemented by notes of cracked pepper, black tea and smoky minerals. Racy, tightly wound black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors become sweeter with air and are framed by silky tannins. Finishes tangy, focused and persistent, with a stony quality.
91-93pts Vinous – 2019 vintage
Fresh dark fruit and floral pastille scents are complemented by suggestions of black pepper, wisteria and smoky minerals. Shows very good depth and energy on the palate, offering pliant blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Finishes on a gently tannic note, showing strong persistence and leaving a sexy floral note behind.
Stéphane Robert wishes that he had gotten more fruit in 2019, “of course,” but what he did pick was “extremely high-quality, with both ripeness and high acidity.” While the skins of the grapes were thicker than usual, “they weren’t leathery and we didn’t get raisining, so it’s not the style of a typically hot year. There’s a lot more life there than what you might expect if you just look at the weather.”
