Concentrated, penetrating and forward on the nose, with great expression of fruit, boundless maturity and fine spicy notes. Energetic, dense, with great depth and tension. Develops a compact structure with lively and delicious tannins.
93pts Wine Spectator – 2015 vintage
“A plush red, with an iron backbone. Ripe plum and currant flavors mingle with toasty and espresso notes, backed by well-integrated tannins and balsamic acidity. Has good density and balance, in the modern style. Tempranillo with Syrah. Drink now through 2025. 25,000 cases made.”
92pts The Wine Advocate – 2015 vintage
“Cropped from a dry and warm year, the 2015 Mauro has riper fruit and more of a Mediterranean character. It’ has some grainy tannins. It’s powerful and might require some more time in bottle and/or powerful food. Some 300,000 bottles produced.”
91pts James Suckling – 2015 vintage
“Enormous mulberry nose and massive dry tannins, but they aren’t aggressive or edgy, and this wine should age nicely. Excellent example from the region. Best from 2018.”
93pts Vinous – 2015 vintage
Inky ruby. Ripe cherry, black currant, mocha and succulent flowers on the expansive nose; vanilla and pipe tobacco nuances build as the wine opens up. Sweet and pliant on the palate, offering intense, oak-spiced black and blue fruit flavors and a hint of candied violet. Chewy tannins lend grip to the clinging, blue-fruit-dominated finish, which shows excellent clarity and a touch of smokiness.
