About Joh. Jos. Prüm – A Family Winemaking Tradition

For nearly a century now, Weingut Jos. Joh. Prüm (also known simply as JJ Prüm) has produced its renown style of Mosel Riesling. This style is characterized by its balance of sweetness and refreshing acidity, its low alcohol and its ability to age for decades.

The JJ Prüm estate is located in the town of Wehlen, Germany. A drawing of this town, with its landmark bridge is featured on the JJ Prüm label. The Prüm’s family roots in this town date as far back as the 12th century. The Estate is run today by Dr. Manfred Prüm, and his daughter Dr. Katharina Prüm. Since 2007, Katharina has been responsible for winemaking at the estate.

JJ Prüm estate represents 22 hectares of decades old mostly ungrafted vines on top cru vineyards sites located in the middle of the Mosel Valley. These sites include Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Babstube, and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr. Like in Burgundy, the names of these sites are associated with local villages. All of them are known for their impressive steepness, which in the mild climate of the Mosel Valley provides great sun exposure. They are equally regarded for their weather beaten Devonian Slate soils which retain heat, providing warmth for the vines at night. In addition, these soils impart the great minerality and racy acidity for which the JJ Prüm Rieslings are known.
